It is rare for a superhero’s earliest stories to be their best. It usually takes time and a writer with something to say to make the most of a hero’s storytelling potential. For Thor, it was not until Walter Simonson’s run that the God of Thunder became the myth he is today. Simonson introduced many of the iconic elements that have been a part of Thor’s character. Thor’s alter ego Donald Blake was removed, and Thor was here to stay. Simonson introduced the iconic character Beta Ray Bill as a contrast with Thor. He also began mixing high fantasy and pulpy science fiction, which is associated with the character in this run, culminating in an epic battle for the fate of Asgard and Earth. This run even has the beloved story where Thor becomes a frog. Simonson’s take on Thor has it all.
